What is buccal massage?

Buccal massage - or sometimes known as intra-oral massage - is a technique that involves massaging the muscles inside of the mouth, and more precisely inside the cheeks.

It involves fascial release techniques to soften overactive muscles – more precisely the pterygoids (medial and lateral) - that are unreachable from the outside and are responsible for the myofascial pain in the jaw caused by temporal mandibular dysfunction.

Buccal massage is however never performed as a standalone treatment. It is part of a treatment plan that previously involves a neck, face and head massage to release effectively all muscles involved in jaw pain such as the scalenes (neck), masseter and zygomatics (face) and temporalis (face and head). Those muscles, if they become tight or restricted, can cause TMJ dysfunction that can manifest through different symptoms such as headaches, tinnitus, bruxism, facial pain or earaches.

In some cases, intra-oral or buccal massage, is also used as an aesthetic treatment to help sculpt the lower face and redefine the jawline, by using lifting techniques around the lips, cheekbones and underneath the mandible.

In both cases, the techniques are safe and gentle and are always performed to a level that feels comfortable for the client.

It is important to note that the jaw holds more than just muscles tensions. It is often a place where unexpressed emotions and stress are being held. Some client might experience tears, fatigue, or even laugh after a release! Taking the time to rest and staying hydrated after a session is important to keep the body safe and into a relaxing state.
