Manual Lymphatic Drainage vs Facial Massage: What’s the Real Difference?
Considered both as a beauty and wellness treatments, face massage and manual lymphatic drainage are becoming highly popular. Everyone is talking about the incredible benefits of those not so new selfcare practices. But are facial massage and manual lymphatic drainage the same?
Let’s explore together the real difference between the two modalities.
Facial massage: sculpt, release, soften
Facial massage is a manual therapeutic technique that targets the muscles and connective tissues of the face, neck, and décolleté. It uses structured and targeted hand movement to mobilise soft tissues, release muscular tension, and improve microcirculation of the skin. By releasing stagnation and tensions, the face will naturally appear brighter and sculpted, and fine lines will be softened. As the skin acts as a sensory interface for the nervous system, facial massage is perceived by the nervous system as extremely relaxing especially if performed in a slow pace.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage: decongest, drain, regulate
Manual lymph drainage is a gentle skin stretching technique that uses light and rhythmic movements to support lymphatic flow. It’s a technique that helps to move excess of fluid and waste products out of swollen areas into functioning lymph nodes. Pain and swelling are reduced, the immune system is boosted and relaxation is promoted. The gentle and rhythmic movement of MLD activate the feel-good nerve fibres that can quiet pain signals and promote a sense of deep relaxation.
Are facial massage and lymphatic drainage compatible, even if they’re not the same?
To simplify, facial massage focuses on muscles and connective tissues using moderate to firm pressure, while lymphatic drainage targets the lymphatic system and vessels with very gentle, light strokes. Understanding which layer we’re working on is key to achieving the best results.
These two techniques complement each other and can be combined in a single session to enhance both beauty and wellness benefits. They can also be performed separately as stand-alone treatments, depending on your concerns.
